21st Century Health

INTRODUCTION In the late 2005, I had gone to school to study for my TOEFL exam. One day when I arrived home, my mother suspiciously called me. “Odko, I have something very important to tell you”, she said. I was green about what she was about to tell me. Nevertheless, I was not afraid since I had not done anything wrong recently.

My mother, from her nature, was very strict. Consequently, her strictness seems to have influenced our interactions, which only occur whenever she needed something from me or whenever I needed something from her. She told me that her biopsy and tomography results were already out. However, the results were positive for cancer. During my entire life I have never been shocked like that moment and I stood there as speechless as a corpse. It seemed like my whole life flipped for one second.

“Is cancer curable?”, I asked with the curiosity of a rat. She said to me that she had only three months to live. Three months were not enough time to find Maaramba Baatar, the most gifted handed person in Mongolia, who proved that cancer has a cure. Indeed time was a thief at this critical moment. Since I heard the shocking news, my close relatives and I were persistently searching for Maaramba, a traditional medical doctor in Mongolia.

Two weeks later after tireless search, we bumped into some good news that there was one such doctor who had the ability to treat cancer patients. This news rekindled my hopes and not only mine, but also my relatives were as happy as a clam. Two days later, we visited the Maaramba Baatar’s office in Ulan Bator, which was the Mongolian Capital city. The office was like monastery. The doctor had many religious wall hangings such as mandala, tantra and some things that looked like Buddhism goddesses. There were also few books arranged neatly in the book shelve.

What really shocked me was how he could treat cancer without a single tomography or any scientific equipment. My hope nearly died since the office gave me a very low impression. This was our last chance to save my mother. He introduced himself to us. He was the ninth generation student of the great master Maramba-Odi.

Shocking as it could be, Maramba had trailed in the footsteps of his master for two decades to learn about medical treatment. Traditional doctors usually diagnosed their patients by reading their pulses. The doctor had medication recipes of five hundred years of history. It took him about fifteen minutes to diagnose my mother and it was amazing. “Your mother has somach cancer and it has reached the third stage”, that is what he said after the diagnosis.

These results were similar to the hospital’s results. He had actually done the work without tomography or scientific equipment. However, I still had one question concerning his abilities to treat cancer. Maramba was positive that my mother would be treated within a year, on condition that the medication was timely and his instructions were followed to the latter. Those few words gave us some light at the end of a dark tunnel. Maramba held a very long conversation with mother concerning how he would treat her.

This was the longest conversation of my life and I did not see any sense in it. Perhaps, the main reason why I could not understand the conversation was that I did not have any background in Buddhism. According to Maramba (2012), the treatment of cancer is complex and requires a lot of communication between the patient and the doctor. The patient has to comprehend the process and strictly believe in his or her doctor. The treatment of cancer was based on three parts that included: basic treatment, cleaning and meditation to healing cancer. These three parts of cancer medical treatment have to be taken concurrently.

According to Maaramba (2012), “Everything happens for a reason while everything disappears by a reason”. In general, this philosophy shows that there is no reason as to why illness is untreatable. Traditional Mongolian Medical Treatment (TMMT) adhered to Maaramba’s (2012) philosophy. In TMMT, religion is the most important part of the medication and doctors usually focused on the beliefs of the patient. In the first part of the treatment, called basic treatment, the patient must interact with Maaramba and believe that his or her illness will be fully treated. The reason for this is that the cells of human body cells will start gaining positive energy when the patient believes that his or her cancer will be completely treated.

Maaramba (2012) cited that every human body cell has to receive maximum capacity of 1010 bits of information and there are about 100-200 billion cells in human liver. In addition, molecules, atoms and cells have unlimited capacity to receive information. Consequently, patients must provide positive information to their cells by thinking positively. In the second part, the patient has to provide an answer on how he or she acquired cancer. Normally, patients have different reasons concerning how they got cancer. This part ensures that the patient realizes what caused their illness.

Therefore, patients deciide to abandon all those unhealthy behaviors such as drinking alcoholism, smoking and disordered eating. After the patient has realized the causes of his or her illness, Maaramba gives his medication to the patient. The medication is called TUN and comprises of 1621 different types of medical plants. This medication is more focused on improving the immune system of the patient and preventing the unregulated growth of cells in body of the patient. The third part of the medication is the meditation.

According to Maaramba (2012), meditation offers the huge efficiency factor to the treatment of cancer. Meditation is performed four-times in not less than 15 minutes per day. Cancer patients need to take a comfortable sitting position while loosening themselves. The patient then clears what is in her mind and focuses on one part of the body. The last thing in this part is to take a deep breath and slowly exhale. During meditation, the patient must think that the disease is being taken out from the body.

This part assists the patient in receiving positive energy by defeating fears and stresses. According to Kasper, Fauci, Longo, Braunwald, Hauser, and Larry (2004), in western medical, cancer refers to a genetic disease that arises due to a series of somatic alterations in DNA. The results of these somatic alterations are unregulated cellular growth. In general, all cancers grow from a single cell. The origin is a crucial discriminating feature between hyperplasia and neoplasia.

The origin takes multiple mutational events for progression from typical to fully malignant phenotype. The early stage of stomach cancer has higher chances of cure than stages three and four. The surgery is most popular form of treatment and requires removal of all or some of the stomach.Western medicine considers human beings to comprise of muscles, fluids and vessels among others. Unlike the western cancer treatment, TMMT opposes surgery and adheres to Buddhism philosophy.

Since human body is extremely complex, the components are mutually dependent. In order to use traditional Mongolian treatment, traditional doctors usually support their patients’ organs and depend on the seasons as well. In the 21st century, science is highly developing though there are some fields such as religion and brain that cannot be fully explained by science. TMMT is a strange part of the field of science, especially in this time of rollercoaster of diseases. According to statistical facts, about 61% of cancer patients of Maramba-Baatar are successfully treated.
