Delores Williams American Intercontinental University Unit 3 MGT652 – Human Resource Strategy Dr. Thomas Gilbertson March 31, 2013 Abstract Sonnerfeld and Peiperl proposed a topology for career systems that places business under four types of distinct strategic staffing categories. These categories are fortress, baseball team, club, or academy according to Greer, 2001. Mary Kay falls under the Baseball Team and Academy. There will a memo place at the end of the explaining the policies I would change or implement as the growth of the business continues.
Every company has its own strategy that it uses to make the company a success. Mary Kay uses the baseball team and academy strategic staffing to motivate women to become million dollar beauty sales consultant. Within this paper, the strategy that Mary Kay or MK matches with, MK overall human resource or HR strategies, and memo changes will be discussed. The Strategy MK Match With There are two strategies that MK matches with, which is the baseball team and the academy strategy.
MK resembles the baseball strategy because it’s focuses on team players, building its success on team sales and recruits.
All MK beauty consultants start at the entry level. MK is a company that pursues innovation strategy. This company does design plus produces new products. According to Sports Mogul Inc. , (2009) “long balls plus overpowering pitches defense is crucial part of the game of baseball” (Picking Your Strategy Defense).
MK understands that empower women to build the financial stability every women wants is always welcome among female entrepreneurs.
This company has its own pitches awaiting women who want to build their financial income. The first key in this strategy is to make sure women in MK beauty consultants has the appropriate skill for this position. Some of these skills should include but not limited to phone etiquette, finding positivity in rejections and understand the product sales itself. All it is required of women is to invest in their future by committing to schedule parties and calling back customers to gain their feedback on particular Mary Kay items.
The academy strategy aspect of the MK entrepreneur business is it innovators and competitors for the long-term production role. Greer (2001) states companies exploit the niches in the marketplace. MK has the brand of make-up its competitor’s sale for a lower price and has poorer quality. In order for Mary Kay independent consultants to be successful is through focused strategies to make a difference in women lives they meet plus build professional business relationship with the ladies they meet every day or through parties.
This allows these women to fall under two extreme clubs and baseball teams.
Every Mk consultant strives to be productive in their sales to win her pink Cadillac or become a million dollar consultant. The only way to do this is by the baseball or academy strategy. Overall HR Strategy Focus The overall HR strategy for beauty consultants of Mary Kay is to provide its independent consultants with information to make their business very successful.
To inform MK consultants of any products that’s limited and no longer sold with Mary Kay. The inventory of a Mary Kay individual reflects on the overall sale of a product offered by MK. Informing women when they have failed to meet MK sales for the month and what they need to do to stay a MK consultant.

The cost to become a MK consultant is too high. Trying to recruit ladies on a low-based income is depleting the ratio of independent beauty consultants with Mary Kay. The dream of Mary Kay Ask is to make the financial dreams of women to come true. Starter Kit is $100.
The first order place has to exceed or meet $250. The cost so far is $350 dollars. Not to mention this new consultant has not created her personal website. This is an additional $50. So now the cost has went from a $100 to $400 to start her Mary Kay business.
If a woman is looking to start a career she is lacking the ability and financial funds to start her business.
If she would like to accept credit and debit cards this is an additional three payments of $12. 95 or a flat rate of $39. 95. Now, her total cost is 439. 95. Most women would prefer to spend this type of money on rent and other monthly bills that will benefit them in her daily activities within the home.
Another concern is how to MK consultants recruit ladies and do not take the time to follow up with to see if the women are struggling to meet required sales goals each month to stay a Mary Kay consultant.
