Fate or Free Will

I believe that everyone’s life is based on fate. Fate brought Romeo and Juliet together, but it was loves job to keep them together. Fate decided to tear them apart.

Have you ever looked up at the stars and wondered if they can speak? In ancient times people believed stars were books that have your life completely mapped out. If you look up at the stars they say what will happen to you. This is fate. Shakespeare defines fate as a predetermined result and no matter what decision we make; it will always end the same. It cannot be changed.

In the epic, bad timed and stupid love story of Romeo and Juliet they could not avoid their death. First, Romeo felt something bad before he met Juliet. Second, due to fate the story becomes a thrilling and amazing love story. Lastly, the human condition follows the path of fate. Fate is the result of the past. When we look backwards we feel the blow of fate.

Fate and free will could end in a good way or bad way. There is no way to predict how it will end. First, before Romeo met Juliet he knew something was wrong. Romeo knew how to read the stars this is because he looked up at the stars and said “I fear, too early; for my mind misgives some consequence yet hanging in the stars. Shall bitterly begin his fearful date with this nights revels and expire the term of a despised life, closed in my breath, by some vile forfeit of untimely death.

” Romeo felt something wrong. He’s basically saying, “I feel something bad is about to happen.” Romeo says, “Hanging in the stars,” which means something destined to happen. Something that could change his life….maybe death. His cousin Benvolio and his friend Mercutio made him go.

They persuaded his saying nothing will go wrong. Just come have fun and forget about Rosaline (his ex). Romeo shows his belief in fate through his words and actions. When he killed Tybalt, Romeo was showing it was led by fate and fate was toying with him. In the story Romeo says, “This days black fate on more days both depends; this but begins the woe others must end.

” Romeo was saying that this battle is, “black fate” meaning that it was a dark and bad event that was going to happen. The Chorus introduces the power of fortune in the opening prologue when we are told that Romeo and Juliet are “star-crossed” (destined for bad luck) and “death-marked,” and that their death will end their parents’ feud. Second, Fate took place even from the beginning. The whole love story is very cliche because two powerful families hate each other and their kids fall in love. Something brought their families together.

They make the sacrifice of dying their family’s make peace. That’s what fate wanted in the beginning. It has nothing to do with love; the story is mainly about bringing the family’s together. At the end Prince says “A glooming peace this morning with it brings. The sun for sorrow will not show his head.

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things; some shall be pardoned, and some punished; for never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” Which means we settle a dark peace this morning: The sun is too sad to show itself. Let’s go, and talk about these sad things some more. The madness between these households is over. It took years for them to settle their differences and two people had to die. Just for them to fix their fighting.

Is there free will involved? Some of you might think free will plays a part in this story. Juliet shows her belief as free will. She is 13 years old and has not put much thought into marriage, but her parents think it’s time. She disobeys and ignores her parents. She fakes her death, falls for Romeo, and refuses Paris.

In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says, “O fortune, fortune! It thou art fickle, what dost thou with him. For then, I hope thou will not keep him long.” Here Juliet is mocking fate by saying fate can’t control itself. People might say that without free will there would be NO choices in life. We would just walk around letting whatever happens happen, but if free will took over completely everything would be up to us and nothing would be meant to happen.

Yes, there is free will but the majority story is fate. I believe that everyone’s life is based on fate. Fate is the development of events beyond a person’s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power. Like karma, but fate is written in the stars. Fate doesn’t ask what you want. Fate knows what’s best for you even if you don’t.

Our fate is in us, you just have to be brave enough to see it. Fate can help you or destroy you. Shakespeare defines fate as a predetermined result and no matter what decision we make; it will always end the same. It cannot be changed.
