Illegal immigration has been one of the United States’ concerns for a while. Even though some are in the country illegally does not mean that they aren’t still people and that they don’t deserve to stay in the United States.
There is a debate going on where people, meaning politicians, are trying to decide if people who are currently in the country illegally should be allowed to stay. Considering, that they came into the country before certain immigration laws were put into place. Most people arguing against illegal immigration don’t realize that they are just ordinary people who are probably looking for a better life when they come to the United States or that immigrants actually make up a good amount of our nation’s population and economy. When people hear the word immigration they think of a group of people from some other part of the world sneaking into our country, especially when the word illegal or unauthorized is placed in front of it. There may be many people fighting against illegally entering into our country but there are just as many fighting for it and I’m one of those people.
To commence,everyone who is against immigration, illegal or otherwise, only think about the benefits that deporting them will have and don’t even consider the consequences. To be more specific, the severe consequences of President Trump’s deportation plan could cause. Affecting the economy and the population of America. “The greatest number of undocumented workers (1.3 million) were employed in leisure and hospitality, followed by the construction sector, which employed 1.1 million”(Ehrenfreund 1).
If there are really that many illegal immigrants in our country right now who are actually helping our economy then why should they be forced to leave and go back to their unfortunate, unfair, and possibly tragic lives. “In an interview aired Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump told ’60 minutes’ correspondent Lesley Stahl that he will deport as many as 3 million undocumented immigrants after he takes office…It remains to be seen whether he will fulfill this pledge”(Ehrenfreund 1). So far I haven’t seen anything to suggest that Donald Trump will do as he says now that he has become the President but it is still very possible.
Which would be a huge mistake because of repercussions that would have on the United States. In conclusion, the people who are currently in the United States illegally shouldn’t be forced to leave because the laws to keep them out weren’t in place when they came into the country. In fact, according to an article written by Max Ehrenfreund in the Washington Post two people who work as the authors of Queens College, City University of New York, named Ryan Edwards and Francesc Ortega the undocumented immigrants that are currently working in our nation work make up for 3% of the U.S. economy.
3% of the nation’s economy might not seem like a lot but it is. It is clear to see why Trump deporting them all would cause some pretty serious consequences to the United States economy.
