Benefits of College Education

Public education in ancient time was like the earliest human sacrifice and sermon; temples and places of worship were the earliest human public schools which were the so-called “sacrifice education”. It was about 4000 years ago in the basin of Euphrates River and Tigris River. Christian churches, cathedrals, medieval monastery schools and European medieval universities all left their indelible imprints on today’s college education (Yao par. 1) . College education has improved all the way along. It has developed into a new, advantageous style which has so many benefits that it can’t be ignored.

College education allows students to prepare professional knowledge for further jobs, to learn interpersonal skills and to make like-minded and long-term friends that can contact regularly and cooperate with work. First of all, comparing to primary education, college education offers students a specific area of professional knowledge which supports their later jobs. Before college, previous education only gave them wide, general knowledge in every subject. In addition,the information was not so thorough. When students get into college, the education system is not the same. They can focus on the main faculty they choose and learn more in depth.

In this way, students can reserve specific knowledge for their careers. For instance, Obama, the current president of USA, studied Politics, international relations and graduated from the Harvard University school of law. His wife, Michelle, was Obama’s schoolmate in the same law school. “Michelle Obama chose to study law at the Harvard Law School… Her passion for furthering African-American rights continued while there, as she took part in demonstrations that encouraged the hiring of people from ethnic minorities.”(Malfere par.

1) Thus, we can see that Michelle was cultivating leadership potential at Harvard Law School. Similarly, Clinton and his wife Hillary were both from Yale university school of law as well. All of them are great leaders in politics; they all studied law whichis very useful and crucial for politic leadership. Therefore, college education effectively gives students preparation for careers and knowledge that is useful and worthwhile for their entire life. Secondly, individuals are able to enhance interpersonal skills and mature in college.

They live, eat, learn and play with other students in campus independently without parents. Studentshave to take care of themselves and everything is on their own. They have to do the chores, tidy their rooms, solve their meals, manage their money and so on. These can really train their ability to adapt to an independent lifestyle and be more mature. What’s more, colleges provide students with a large social group and public environment that we have never experienced before. They have plenty of activities and events with large variety in which students can get involved when they are leisure.

Students have the opportunity to interact with other students and faculty, to join student organizations and clubs, and to take part in discussions and debates(“College Education” par. 5). According to Arthur Chickering’s “Seven Vectors” student development theory, “developing mature interpersonal relationships is one of the seven stages students progress through as they attend college”(qtd in “College Education” par. 5) In addition, students ranked “interpersonal skills” as the most important skill used in their daily lives in a 1994 survey of 11,000 college students (par. 5). Thus, interpersonal skills can be promoted during college time and it is really crucial.

Last but not least, college lives give students chances to make true-hearted, long-term and like-minded friends that they can cherish throughout their whole life and succeed in career. Making friends have many advantages both in mental and physical aspects. For starters, individuals won’t be lonely with someone else’s accompany. They can also gain help from each other when adversities come, and they can feel satisfied and delightful while hanging out together. More importantly, friends in college are potential for cooperation in future career. If a group of friends in college have similar interests and ambitions, they are willing to set up their career and fight against adversities together.

Therefore, they are more likely to succeed. Have you ever heard of the famous film “The Chinese partner”? So let’s take Yu Minhong, the protagonist in the film, as an example. After failing college entrance examination two times, Mr. Yu got into Peking University. He got to know some like-minded friends during college time such as Xu Xiaoping and Wang qiang. Later, they gradually established New Oriental together step by step.

Even now, New Oriental has a large quantity of students, and it is a enormous and well-known success. Therefore, it is clear that students can both make friends in college and gain success by cooperating with them. In brief, students can not only store up particular knowledge for career but also train interpersonal skills and makes friends in common. Knowledge provides them with wisdom. Interpersonal skills help them build up social groups. Friends offer them friendship and cooperation in need.

Thus, college education has so many indubitable benefits and it is always a pivotal and crucial step in one’s entire life. Students must work industriously in order to pursue higher knowledge and wisdom. Thereby, keep learning and fighting! Try your best in college and make full use of every second.
