2 The best combination of paradigms for the 21st century as Ferrara sees it is a combination of Paradigms C and D. This may even be amplified by adding elements of Paradigm B. Although Paradigm D is effective and efficient it is not sufficient alone.

Paradigm D uses the concept of price led costing and focuses on the issue of continuous improvement but it does not take into consideration the actual costs which should be determined by using the ABC method because it is more precise. This is where the notion of Paradigm C comes in.

Using these two Paradigms in conjunction with each other gives real meaning to ABC’s role of forcing consideration of alternative cost structures. To more effectively consider the entire scope adding in elements from Paradigm B will be beneficial.

Distinguishing between fixed and variable costs will more accurately portray totals in the product-line income statement. Combining elements from these three paradigms will allow us to include aspects of product life cycles and products that are expected to be cash users versus cash generators during different stages of their life cycles in our analysis of product-line income statements. Chapter 2 Question 2.

1a The value added concept begins with purchases and ends with sales. The key within this concept is to maximize the difference between purchases and sales. The value chain concept breaks down the chain from suppliers of basic raw materials to end use customers into relevant activities to understand the behavior of costs and the sources of differentiation. In the value added concept, management accounting relies on a single cost driver whereas in the value chain concept multiple cost drivers are used based on he different activities in the chain. 1b Structural and executional cost drivers are the cost drivers that are based on different activities throughout the value chain. Structural cost drivers are distinguished by scale, scope, experience, technology and complexity. Executational cost drivers are distinguished by workforce involvement, total quality management, capacity utilization, plant layout, product configuration and linkages with suppliers or customers. Question 2. 2a A “strategy map” is a comprehensive framework for describing a strategy.

The strategy map specifies critical elements and their linkages for an organizations strategy and was design for describing and implementing a strategy that may be as useful as the income statement, balance sheet and statement of cash flows for financial planning and reporting. Question 2. 2b According to Kaplan and Norton, the two basic approaches for increasing economic value are revenue growth and productivity. Each of these strategies embodies two components. Within the revenue growth strategy are the components of building revenue through new markets, products and customers and increasing sales through existing customers.

Within the productivity strategy a company strives to improve costs and utilize its assets more efficiently.

Question 2. 3 The five principles of Strategy Focused Organization are as follows: 1) to translate the strategy to operational terms, 2) align the organization to the strategy, 3) make strategy everyone’s everyday job, 4) make strategy a continual process and 5) mobilize leadership for change. When translating strategies into operational terms, companies should utilize strategy maps and balance scorecards to specify detail and critical elements in their growth strategies to create common reference and organization for all involved.

To align the organizational strategy, the company should ensure the the hcorporate, business and support unit synergies are all aligned to the same strategy. To ensure that strategy is a continual process in a firm leadership should pursue the double loop process by following the following 3 steps: linking strategy to the budgeting process, management meetings tonreviewnthe strategy and initiating a process for learningr and adapting the strategy.

Making the strategy everyone’s everyday job is accomplished through communication and education to make employees better the strategy and more motivated to make it succeed.

By mobilizing leadership for change, a company should ensure that the top bottom change is carried out energetically with everyone on board through mobilization, governance and finally though a strategic management system. Question 2. 4 Intangibles fit into the strategy map because they are the foundation of every organization’s strategy and the measures in this perspective are the ultimate lead indicators.

They are essential because they are required to support the internal process which is most critical in creating value for customers (customer perspective) and shareholders (financial perspective) which are the next to tiers up from internal process. These highly important intangibles are the learning and growth perspectives of human capital, information capital and organizational capital.

Question 2. 5 According to Kaplan, corporate strategy should come before stakeholders’ interests.

The stakeholder theory confuses means and ends and ultimately ends up less powerful, less actionable and less satisfying than the strategy map approach. This is precisely because you cannot be all things to all customers and strategy is about choice. Instead of using an expensive and non differentiated approach developing a strategy to satisfy and meet the expectations of a segment is the more beneficial approach according to Kaplan.
