HerfatherwasmoreusedtothestrictnessoftheDominicanRepublic,suchasspeakingoutagainstauthoritybecausehewasinanundergroundsocietytooverthrowthedictator.HermotherpreferredtheU.S.becauseofcertainfreedoms,suchasfreedomofspeech.IntheDominicanRepublic,Cukitawasapoorstudent;shedidn’twanttocontinuethisbehaviorintheUnitedStates.Onedayherteacher,SisterMaryJoseph,askshertodoaspeechfortheteacher’sdayaddressatherschoolassembly.
Sheacceptedtheoffer.Sheshowedhermomherspeech;shelikeditsomuch,sheshowedittoCukita’sfather.Hedidn’tlikeit;thiscausedawedgeintheirfamily.Hethoughtitwasaninsulttoherteachers.Hedidn’twantCukitatodisrespectthem.
Althoughhehadgoodintentions,hecameoffratherharsh.Hebecameenragedbecauseofherspeech.Filledwithrage,helaceratedherspeech.Hisactionswereunacceptable.ThisdiscouragedCukitaandupsethermother.Cukitadidn’tmeantoenrageherfather.
Shehadanamazingspeech thatshewasn’tabletogivebecauseofhisselfish,inconsiderate,andunacceptableactions.Hermotherlovedherspeech.ThisgaveCukitahappinessherfathercrushed.Heshould’veconsideredherfeelingsmore.Inmyopinion,Cukita’sfatherwastoorough.
Hehadnorighttoshredher paperlikethat.Insteadofbecomingenragedatphraseshedidn’tlike,heshould’vetalkedtoCukitaaboutpartsherdidn’tlikeandshould’veaskedhertoedit,change,orclarifythoseparts.Hecould’vegavesomeconstructivecriticism.Itwaslovingthathedidn’twanthertosayanythingrudeor disrespectful,buthecould’vehandledthewholesituationbetter.Therearesomany differentrouteshecould’vetakenforthisscenario,buthechoseapaththathurttheothersaroundhim. Cukita’sfathercameoffthewrongwayeventhoughhe hadgoodintentions.HewastryingtoprotectCukitafromsayingsomethingshe’d laterregret.Ithinkheshould’vethoughtmoreabouthowhe’daffecther.Thisshows thathelovesCukitaandjustwantedtoprotecther.Intheend,Cukitagaveanother speechthatherwholeschoolliked.Itwasaveryrushedspeechthatwasluckilysuccessful.Cukitawouldn’thavegonethroughthatifherdadwould’vetalkedtoherabouthisthoughtsonherfirstspeech.Thiscycleofunnecessaryeventsgoesbacktohimnotthinkinghis thoughtsandactionsthrough.Alloftheseeventscould’veandshould’vebeenprevented.Inconclusion,Cukita’sfatherjustneededtothinkmoreabouthisactions.Heshould’vetalkedwithher,givehishonestopinion,and(if necessary)politelyaskhertochangeacertainpart.Atheartheisagoodpersonthat’srough aroundthe edges.Hejustneedstopolishupwhenitcomestohisactions.TheshreddingCukita’spaperwasunnecessarybutit’sa lessonthatcanbelearnedforCukita,hermother,andherfather.
