Death Amongst the Next Generation
You’d expect it to be someone else, but it’s you holding the gun. Your last thought, ‘ I am worthless, what do I have to live for?’ Then you pull the trigger, and are another life unnecessarily taken. Today the third leading cause of death between the ages of 15-24 is suicide, but more worrisome yet is that suicide is the fourth leading cause of death between the ages of 10-14.
Overall, suicides are the main cause of death among teens. For every one completed suicide there are 25 other people who have attempted suicide. Suicides are not confined to certain age groups, gender, or social and economical groups, but males are more likely to complete a suicide than females, making males suicide rates higher. Although male’s rates are higher, teenage girls are more likely to commit suicide than teenage boys. It is a hard concept to grasp, why would someone wish to die, to take his or her life and never walk the earth again? There are many reasons.
Teens could have feelings of worthlessness, and an inability to find success in school, or friends and peers have rejected them. It might also be family problems, depression, or they know someone else who has committed suicide. Suicides are cries for help, and they don’t happen suddenly and spontaneously. 4 out of 5 suicides have warning signs, and heeding these signs could save a life. There are ways to prevent suicides, through counseling, residential treatment, and medication, but the one thing that someone dealing with suicidal thoughts need is love. You need to show them an unconditional love, and that no matter what they are going through you’ll help them through it.
They need to know, that if they weren’t in your life, it wouldn’t be the same. They need to feel important, and wanted. Suicide attempts need to be taken seriously, or someone may be gone forever, never living to their full potential. After an attempt the person needs to have a mental evaluation. No one on this earth should feel rejected or unwanted, and if a person commits suicide, than a life has been taken unnecessarily, and that person will never get a second chance. So take attempts and suicidal talk seriously, or someone, somewhere could be lost forever. Cites www.teensuicide.us/articles1.html
