Slavery in the Americas had a contentious history, dating back at least to the Aztecs,[85] and played a major role in the history and evolution of some countries, triggering at least one revolution and one civil war, as well as numerous rebellions. There is a lot of slavery in other countries, especially in countries like Africa. Over the past 20 years the rate of slavery has raised a lot. Right now there 27 million slaves in the world. Around 80% of human trafficking victims are women and girls.
50% of human trafficking victims are under 18. Even though we don’t realize it thousands of victims are trafficked into the US every year. Also the cost of slaves in going down to about $90, so more people are buying them because they’re becoming cheaper. Also in India slaves are a big problem too. Children are kidnapped from their villages when they are as young as five years old, between 200,000 and 300,000 children are held captive in locked rooms and forced to weave on looms for food. In India—as well in other countries—the issue of slavery is exacerbated by a rigid caste system.
The International Labor Rights and Education Fund is one organization that has rescued many of these child slaves. Internal forced labor may constitute India’s largest trafficking problem; men, women, and children in debt bondage are forced to work in industries such as brick kilns, rice mills, agriculture, and embroidery factories. A big part of the slave trade is also in the Middle East. The Arab slave trade mainly takes place in the Indian Ocean, Red, and Mediterranean seas.
