While this text today, is most often associated with a particular denomination called the “Church of Christ”, which uses it as a proof text for a doctrine known as “baptismal regeneration”, this text was not a text that was used for this purpose in early

America.

It was the common “evangelism” text, used by all. And while “Evangelicals” may have argued about what was actually happening when someone “obeyed the gospel” and “repented and was baptized”, no one was arguing over what had to be done, they all did the same thing, Just argued over what it meant. The Bible (which they all believed in made it perfectly clear that this was to be the method of responding to the gospel) and consequently, there was “nothing” controversial about it. And this text was the “evangelism” text that all “evangelists” used to issue their “calls” for “repentance”.

Today, if you quote this text to a Nazified “Evangelical” with their “positive Christianity”, they will claim you are a “Church of Christ” and accuse you of teaching “baptismal regeneration”, But that is simply how far away, they have fallen from the Biblical text and a Biblical faith.

Pioneer evangelists used to even hold their “revivals” and “tent meeting” by “the riverside” on purpose, in order to immediately “Baptize” their “converts”. This was done by everyone, Baptists, Pentcostals, Methodists, Independents. It was not even a controversial matter. It was “customary”.

Yes, they were mocked, yes they were laughed at, yes they were ridiculed, of course.

In fact, THEY STILL ARE TO THIS DAY!!! The picture to the left in the pictures above is from “Oh Brother Where Art Thou”, a movie starring George Clooney, in which this scene mocks them still to this day! But that is in fact, who they were, and the “real gospel” is what they WERE preaching to people. And this is PRECISELY HOW real EVANGELICALS were being taught to RESPOND to the REAL GOSPEL. But this portion of both the Scriptures, and the “gospel” were removed because it is not “conducive” to “mass marketing”.

When the Nazi gospel began making it’s rise in America, “repentence and baptism” were replaced with “say this prayer”. They called it “the sinner’s prayer” (which is nice since there is no such thing in the Bible), and in this “magic prayer”, after saying their “abracadabras” they “invited” their “sungod Christ, “into their hearts” (as though the real Christ had any desire to be there to start with? ) And then this “spirit” which was “born at Christmas”, would magically “come” and “indwell” their solar-plexus, and get them “all fired up” for this “Christ”.

Things were “going so good” who cared if it was no here to be found in a single Bible anywhere. Their famous text instead became this… Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

But, if you notice, there is not a single mention ot “anyone’s solar-plexus” (or “heart” as they say). Because that’s not what it is talking about. it is actually talking to an entire community that had become apostate. They had forsaken the “supper”. They had forsaken domestic worship.
