John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress Is one of the most well know allegories In history. All of the characters in the book symbolize different things. Two characters, Christian and Apollyon, are two major symbolic characters in the story.

Christian is the books main character and the hero too. He symbolizes all of the other Christians that are on their Journey to find Christ. He wants to find religious truth and the Celestial City, which is heaven. Throughout the entire book, Christian goes on a treacherous Journey to the Celestial City after he got an invitation to go there.

He eaves his family and city behind In order to find the Celestial City. He faces various temptations and dangerous situations throughout his journey.

With help from some companions he meets along the way to the City, and with his faith in God, Christian Is able to defeat his enemies and temptations. That means that no matter what challenges someone faces in their life, God is always there for help. God will always be there In times of need. Despite people telling Christian not to go to the City, and that It does not exist, Christian keeps moving on.

Finally, Christian and his friend that e met on the way the City, Hopeful, make it to the City.

First, they face their final test as Christians. They have to cross the river in order to get to the City doors. They begin to cross the river, but the river gets deeper and rougher the farther out they go. Christian almost gave in and drowned, but Hopeful helped Christian. Hopeful told Christian that Christian’s faith has gotten him this far and it will also get him to the doors. Christians Just has to keep strong In his faith.

He signifies the worldly evil forces. He tries to steer Christian from the path and to Join the world. They fight each other and Christian ends up winning. Christian defeats Apollyon, symbolizing that Christian defeated the worldly powers.

The world tries to pull him away from Christian’s goal of finding the Celestial City, but Christian uses his faith to defeat the worldly powers. In the end, Christian completes his journey. He has some help from friends. HIS faith also helps him out. He reaches the Celestial City.

Worldly powers were no match for Chrlstlan because he had God on his side.
