The Nation of Great Minds
“Think about it. Over the next 10 years, nearly half of all new jobs will require education that goes beyond a high school education. And yet, as many as a quarter of our students aren’t even finishing high school.
The quality of our math and science education lags behind many other nations. America has fallen to ninth in the proportion of young people with a college degree.” ” If we take these steps – if we raise expectations for every child, and give them the best possible chance at an education, from the day they are born until the last job they take – we will reach the goal that I set two years ago: By the end of the decade, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. ” ~President Obama State of the Union Address 2011 Every day, most children reside in a place for about seven hours. Students are trapped in a building and basically forced to engulf thoughts into their helpless minds. Once the thoughts reach the destination in the student’s brain, the student analyzes the information and takes it in.
This process may seem like torture but it enriches a student’s life unbelievably. Extending the school day will not only help a student, but it will change their life and future completely. The United States wants to be at a higher level of education than other countries. How can that be possible if the students barely have enough time to finish one lesson in a class period? The extension is seriously required if the US wants to not only raise above other countries, but innovate the future. The school day extension would provide students with more hands-on experience and knowledge. The extended school time will allow students to actually understand the material being fed into the brains.
The extension of the school day will give the students a chance to explore other fields of education. Even with the most prosperous economy in the world, the US will soon fail to be on the same level of education with other countries because the present day students are the future of tomorrow. The school day extension would provide students with more hands-on experience and knowledge. More time in school means that classes will be longer. Longer classes literally mean more information will be given to the students.
All the time, clean-up procedures are not being followed because of the short amount of class time. This leads to accidents involving serious injuries or fatalities. Therefore, with more class time the death rate over silly accidents in the US will eventually decrease. With more time given during class, students will have more time to do research, soak in information, and more time to clean-up afterward. Moreover, students will not be running in the hallways rushing to class causing unnecessary trouble because they will have more time. More research and more information will improve the minds of the children of tomorrow and more time will ensure the safety of our students.
The extended school time will allow students to understand the material being fed into their brains. With more time on the clock, the students will have more time to think out and analyze the information being instructed to them. With the time given to students now, it is severely difficult for some students to keep up. With more time, the teacher will be able to explain the information more clearly to suit the student’s needs. At most schools in the US, homework is given out to students every day to ensure that they understand the information and will be able to spit the information out at anytime like when the students have to take standardized tests.
Without a crystal clear understanding of the material instructed, the student will fail at doing the homework correctly and will fail at showing their knowledge on standardized testing. Students don’t learn instantly and with more time and explanation, they will be able to understand what is taught to them every single day. The extension of the school day will give the students a chance to explore other fields of education. With all the classes compacted into equal time periods, students don’t get the chance to explore what the world has to offer them. With more time, the students will be able to learn other subjects besides the main subjects like math, science, and English.
Moreover, students will have more interest in what they are learning. With more interesting programs, students will be set for the future by setting goals and knowing what profession they would like to be once they are grown-ups. For instance, they do different fields of profession at the Bergen County Academies in NJ. The program is a huge success and statistics show that the students are well-prepared for higher education. The Academies offer different areas of profession like Medical Science, Telecommunication, Science and Technology, Business and Finance, and the Arts. This intrigues the students and challenges them to do better in school because they are fond of what they are doing.
Giving students a chance to explore subjects that aren’t basic will allow students to think outside of the box making them better learners. The US wants to improve schools across the country in order to rise above the world’s leading education nations. The first step is to lengthen the school day. The school day extension would provide students with more hands-on experience and knowledge. The extended school time will allow students to actually understand the material being fed into the brains.
The extension of the school day will give the students a chance to explore other fields of education. It is absolutely true that other nations are getting the best of us in education. More kids need to graduate. More kids need to go to college. More kids need to have a better future. If all of these statements eventually came true, the US would be indomitable because we would have all these amazing leaders on their way to making a difference to our nation.
Why not take the first step to making the US a better place? Why not lengthen the school day? If it means that the US will be more than just the US. If it means that this would be a nation of great minds building the future of tomorrow and inspiring others to do the same. Why not?
