Men, Women and Emotions
The textbook shows a detailed research on gender differences and emotional expression. According to the text, the emotions in both men and women are determined by culture and circumstances. In this book, it is hard to tell which sex is more emotional than the other is because emotions take many shapes, and they are dictated by factors like psychology, cultural rules, and cognitive processes (Author 1). The article focuses more on gender differences and their specific reactions when they are angry or under stress.
The article reveals that a stressed male staring at an angry face will not understand the emotions of the angry face. This is perhaps the reason why most males become stoic and silent whenever they are under stress and are looking at an angry person (University of Southern California). The article states that the way information is processed in the brain is the one that dictates how a male and a female will react to anger or fear. In circumstances where men are subjected to acute stress, they had poor response to facial reactions. The “Fusiform Face Area” of the brain that processes visual information in conjunction with other parts of the brain are responsible for analyzing and comprehending facial expressions (University of Southern California).
Men under stress showed less activity in the fusiform area and this is why they remain stoic and silent. On the other hand, women had a higher level of activity in the area and tended to display their emotions ike looking for help when stressed. This complements the text in the book that indicates that women are more emotional than men since they express themselves when under stressful circumstances.Although the text indicates that both sexes react to anger and fear in different ways, the article refutes this by stating that men will be stoic and silent when under circumstances that generates fear, anger, or stress. The book contradicts the article by stating that there is extremely little evidence that one sex is more hit by everyday emotions than the other is and the kind of emotion does not matter (Author 2).
The text states that culture plays a great role in emotional expression more than sex. Men from North America will express their anger freely than men from Asian men who are taught to control their emotional expressions (Author 1). The book also states that circumstance overrules gender rules. A game can call for equal reaction from both sexes. In addition to that, people will tend to control their emotions if they are dealing with a person of a higher status.
This is contrary to the assertion that men will be stoic and silent when aced with emotions. The article is too generalizes that men irrespective of culture, psychology and cognition have the same reaction to stress or anger. This statement somehow contradicts the text. However, the text somehow provides a basis for the research of the article especially on gender differences and emotional display (Auuthor 2). The article, therefore, tries to expand more on the emotional display of emotions, which has been mentioned in the text. The article states that “the fusiform area and other parts of the brain that are responsible for interpretation and comprehension of visual messages.
” The article contains terms like fusiform area, cortisol hormone and their roles in stress and anger circumstances (University of Southern California). The text has terms like psychological, cognitive, and cultural that help the reader to research more into their meaning so that the topic can be comprehended. This article acknowledges the differences in reaction in both men and women, when they are subjected to stress or fear. This article is very significant to behavioral science since it tries to determine why the differences in reactions. It will also help me to understand my social life, how I relate with both men and women friends.
This article has expounded the fact that women will tend to look for solace and support when faced with stress while men remain uptight. This partially explains why men tend to keep to themselves in marital, and work problems unlike women who are fast in seeking for help. Women have also been branded “emotional’ because they will interpret facial signals fast, and react accordingly while men are branded unemotional because they do not comprehend what they feel or see. This paper can help the community to understand and relate with each other well.
