Should Phones Be Allowed in School?
Today, everybody has a cellphone. There are about 61,000,000,000 more cellphones than people in the world. Today, a cellphone is a key to life.A cellphone can give someone more social status and friends, but they can also in school.
Students should be able to have their phone in school because students are able to make emergency phone calls, children’s parents can contact them, and are able to use their phones in class for educational purposes. To begin, students should be able to have their phones in school because they are able to use their phones for educational purposes.According to Kate Taylor, a writer for the New York Times, “The ban, which was put in place by former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, has been unpopular among parents, who worry about not being able to contact their children during school hours and in the time just before and after” (Taylor). This means that parents of students in New York City are feeling uneasy and scared about how they are unable to reach their child over the phone, due to the ban on cellphones in public schools.
The parents are worried that their child’s safety, they have no way to contact their child. Next, According to Josh Higgins, “73% of Advanced Placement and National Writing Project teachers said their students use phones in the classroom or to complete assignments, according to a Pew Research Center study” (Higgins). This means that if students are already using their phones and it is not causing problems then why is it necessary to take away the phones if they are using them for beneficial reasons. Students should also be able to have their phones on them because if an intruder comes into the building they are able to call their parents or the police. All in all, students should be able to use their phones in school, because they can use them for educational purposes. Another reason why students should be able to have their cellphones in school is because their parents are able to contact them during school hours.
According to Kate Taylor, a writer for the New York Times, “The ban, which was put in place by former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, has been unpopular among parents, who worry about not being able to contact their children during school hours and in the time just before and after” (Taylor). This means that parents are afraid that will not be able to contact their child during school hours. If a child is making plans after school, the child will not be able to contact their parents to tell them. Students should be able to have phones in school, because their parents are able to contact them. Also, According to Kate Taylor, a writer for the New York Times, “The ban, which was put in place by former Mayor Michael R.
Bloomberg, has been unpopular among parents, who worry about not being able to contact their children during school hours and in the time just before and after” (Taylor). This means that Students parents in New York City are feeling uneasy about how they are unable to reach their child over the phone, due to the ban on cellphones in public schools. Lastly, According to Elizabeth Ritter, “Parents think of cellphones as a connection to their children in an emergency” (Ritter). This means that parents rely on their child’s cell phones to help them contact their child during an emergency at school. The parents are worried that their child’s safety, they have no way to contact their child.
Overall, students should be able to have their phones in school because their parents are able to contact their child if there is an emergency. Lastly, students should be able to have their phones in class because they are able to use them for educational purposes.According to Julia Mccandless an author for the Center of Digital Education, ” In fact, the report forecasts that United States higher education institutions will spend $6.6 billion on IT in 2015 alone” (Mccandless). This means that if schools allowed their students to use their own smartphones in class for educational purposes, the schools and the government can save money because they will not have to spend the money on tablets or other devices.
Mccandless also said, “These products are forecasted to increase by 8 percent by the end of 2015, resulting in a total spending of $522 million on those products alone” (Mccandless). This means that if schools allowstudents to use their own phones they will not have to purchaseexpensive products and can save money in the long run. Schools can than use this money that they have saved to fix up the school. Lastly, according to Leena Rao, “Apple‘s SVP of Marketing Phil Schiller announced that there are currently 20,000 education and learning applications that have been built for the iPad” (Rao).
This means that if students are allowed to use their phones in class they have access to over 20,000 different apps that are educational. This will also help schools save money if they do not have to buy Ipads, Computers, and apps for these devices. Lastly, According to Josh Higgins an author for “USA today”, “73% of Advanced Placement and National Writing Project teachers said their students use phones in the classroom or to complete assignments, according to a Pew Research Center study” (Higgins). This means that more than half the students in the schools are already using their cell phones in the classrooms for educational purposes. Not only does this help the students to excel in their learning, but it helps the school save money, therefore it is not necessary to take them away. To summarize, students should be able to have their phones in class because they can use them for educational purposes.
On the other hand, some may say that allowing students to carry phones in class is unnecessary. They think that it can cause distractions and disrupt the class. However, this can be avoided by allowing students to use their phones for educational purposes rather than playing games. According to Josh Higgins “73% of Advanced Placement and National Writing Project teachers said their students use phones in the classroom or to complete assignments, according to a Pew Research Center study” (Higgins). This shows that students are already using their cellphones and it is not causing an distractions, in fact it is helping the students and influencing them to learn and grow. As aforementioned, students should be allowed to have their phones in school because, students are able to make emergency phone calls, children’s parents can contact them, and are able to use their phones in class for educational purposes.
If schools allow students to have phones this can lower the rate of death during a school emergency. If students are able to make emergency phone calls they can escape the situation. This will result in less deaths in schools. If schools allow phones in class, it will help lower the amount of emergencies and deaths during the emergencies. The children of the future are being affected by this conflict we should help them not hurt them. Work Cited Higgins, Josh.
